Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma, yesterday told Parliament that his ministry had found private sector sponsors to construct 29 railway stations at a cost of Rs. 420 million on the Northern Railway line.
He said that the allegation made by JVP MP Lakshman Nipunarachchi that the Railway Department had wasted Rs. 600,000/- to plant Jack fruit and Coconut trees opposite the Fort Railway Station was not true.
"Similarly, there is no truth in JVP members’ allegations that the Railway Department had spent Rs. 10 million for a propaganda campaign of the Uthuru Mithuru Programme. We did not even spend Rs. one million, as we could find State and Private sector sponsors," he said.
"We followed the very same method practiced by your party to raise funds for the "Dahasak Wev" (Thousand Tanks) programme. You were the Minister who launched that programme, therefore you are well aware how such a propaganda campaign could be done without spending public money", Minister Alahapperuma said.
