Many newspapers reported a record collection at Dehiwala Zoo. While it is indeed good news I feel that there are many things that the authorities can do to uplift the condition of the Zoo and provide more facilities to the visitor. I visited the Zoo recently and I went to the main restaurant to have a decent meal, especially for my seven-year-old niece who was accompanying me. I was disappointed to find that the restaurant served only ordinary rice and curry. Is this the meal that foreigners also have to take? And the restaurant looked horrible, bland, dull and gloomy. The front counter was stacked with packets of biscuits and soft drinks, like a wayside boutique. Their choice of menus should also be revised to serve sandwiches etc., for foreign visitors and children.
The condition of toilets also can be improved. I would like to put forward a suggestion, in favour of animals. Why not close the Zoo one day a week, most probably on a weekday so that animals can have some peace? So on that day they will enjoy a quiet time on their own. Authorities of the Zoo, this is for your consideration. I am sure all animals will appreciate it.
