Pensions from private funds

Mr. L. L. Liyanage of Ambalangoda has in The Island of 18/8, reminded the president of his promise to grant a reasonable pension and to correct the anomalies existing at the moment. We fully agree with him and hope that this request should be met without further delay.

I wish to add one more point to the ideas expressed by Mr. Liyanage for the kind attention of the President. There are two Categories of Pensioners in Sri Lanka. First is the one which Mr. Liyanage speaks of. The second category is the state corporation pensioners who receive their pensions from private pension Funds, established by such bodies. They also confront the same difficulties as the state sector pensioners.

Pensions of the second type have not been increased for the last seven years! They were clamouring for a revision without success. The State Bank Pensioners Association is among those affected.

My request to the President is to consider all pensioners irrespective of whether they are state employees, or corporation employees when granting increases to pensioners. They are always excluded when granting such relief, although they are also affected by the high cost of living. Any revision or increase should benefit all pensioners.
