Faces no problem for Ruhunu voters – Susil

Commenting on the inclusion of teledrama actresses Anarkali Akarsha and Susantha Chandramali in the UPFA nomination list to contest the forthcoming Southern Provincial Council elections, General Secretary of the Alliance Minister Susil Premjayantha said the matter posed no problem to the people of the Ruhuna because they were enthusiastically waiting to strengthen the hands of ‘Ruhunu Puthra’ President Mahinda Rajapaksa by voting for the betel symbol.

He was answereing a question on why the UPFA decided to field teledrama actresses for the polls and the people were wondering why they had been included when there were so many seasoned politicians in the South.

The Minister responded to The Island’s question moments before he signed the nomination papers yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat in the presence of SLFP Treasurer Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and Administrative Secretary S. H. Ariyasena.

He said that many old guards are in the fray but despite ex-Chief Minister Shan Wijelal Silva being nominated, the UPFA has still not decided on the chief ministerial candidate.

Premjayantha said that the UPFA would hand over nominations by Friday and expressed confidence that it would get a two – thirds majority or over 81 per cent of votes cast.

Attorney-at-Law, SLFP activist and Coordinating Secretary for the Gama Neguma Programme attached to the Presidential Secretariat Sampath Tennekoon who was present during the signing of the nomination papers said that Anarkali was included because she hailed from a politically popular family in Matara but subsequently resided in Nawalapitiya. Her grandfather the late K. Jayatilleke had been a respected Deputy Minister in the Government of Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

On the nomination of Susantha Chandramali, Tennekoon said that she hailed from Walasmulla in the South and her family members were party activists.
