Tourism Promotion Minister to continue ‘raids’ on hotels

Tourism Promotion Minister Faizer Mustapha yesterday said that he had decided to pay more surprise visits to Tourist Board approved Hotels and Restaurants and take stern action against the offenders.

The Minister said that he had instructed Tourist Board officials to take action to suspend the licenses of these two "A" grade Chinese hotels operated by foreigners which had failed to maintain hygiene and cleanliness in their kitchens.

The Minister declined to name the two hotels saying "it’s not fair".

"If they do not conform to the required health standards within the given time-frame, we would have to ask them to pack up and leave", he warned.

He said that the Minister of Tourism Nandana Gunatilleke had advised him to ensure that all Tourist Board approved Hotels and Restuarants maintained the required standards .

Asked whether the stomach aches five visiting New Zealand cricketers complained of after consuming meals was instrumental in influencing him to carry out the visits, the Minister said that he is in the habit of "taking off at midnight to carry out surprise checks on standards at times when some Tourist Board officials neglect their duties".
