DSI Supersport Inter-School Volleyball Championships 2009
Senanayake Central wins honours

The final round matches of the DSI Supersport Volleyball Championships were held on August 28 and 29 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo. The Championship is organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and the Education Ministry in association with the Sri Lanka Schools Volleyball Association.

The tournament is sponsored by DSI (Pvt.) Ltd. The Championships were initially conducted at District, Provincial and, finally, National levels and it was open for Under-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 age group categories for both girls and boys. As many as 4,724 teams participated in the qualifying tournaments, including teams from the Northern Province. Six teams from Jaffna and four from Vavuniya qualified for the finals. It was noteworthy to see a number of teams participate from the Eastern Province, representing all age group categories.

It was Senanayake Central College, Madampe, who entered the limelight of the Championship by winning two age groups titles as well as two 1st runners-up trophies in the Championship.

Anamaduwa vs. Ibbagamuwa –

On the first day, in the first final, St. Bernadeth’s College took on St. Anthony’s College, Thoduwawa, and it was St. Bernadeth who beat St. Anthony’s by 25/22, 25/12, 25/10 to emerge champions of the U-14 girls’ category.

In the U-14 boys’ final between Senanayake, Madampe, and Vimalabuddhi MV, Seenigama, the former edged out Vimalabuddhi in straight sets 25/13, 25/17, 25/16.

The third final was between Anamaduwa Central College and Ibbagamuwa MV of the U-16 girls.’ Ibbagamuwa posted a hard fought win recording a score of 25/13, 30/28, 25/15.

Five finals were scheduled to be held on the 2nd day, and in the first match, Ruwanwella Rajasinghe Central College beat Senanayake Central in a closely contested game 3-2 in the U-16 boys’ final. (12/25, 25/20, 18/25, 25/22, 15/12).

Second Final –

In the 2nd final, Kendapola College, Rakwana, took on Dutugemunu College, Buttala, and it was Kendapola College which won with a score of 15/7 and 15/10 to emerge champions of the U-12 girls’ category. In the U-12 boys’ final, between Thotagamuwa Wijayabahu College and Mutukeliyawa College, Wijayabahu beat Mutukeliyawa by 9/15, 15/12, 16/14. A best-of-three (15-point) sets format were applied for both U-12 categories.

The 4th final of the day was between Anamaduwa Central College and Senanayake, Madampe, of U-18 girls.’ Senanayake posted a hard fought win over Anamaduwa recording a score of 25/23, 23/25, 25/16, 25/14.

Keen Tussle –

The much anticipated U-18 boys' final was between Davisamara College, Seeduwa, and Senanayake, Madampe.

The two teams have met each other several times in finals before and both teams were looking eagerly to show their supremacy in this National Sport by clinching the title.

Although a stiff resistance was shown by Senanayake Central in the first round, Davisamara posted an easy three-nil win over Senanayake recording a score of 26/24, 25/20, 25/20 and retained the U-18 boys’ title.

Best Player –

Sadun Madusanka of Davisamara, Seeduwa, was awarded the best player of the boys’ category of the C’ships while Nilanthika Sanjeewani of Senanayake Central was picked as the best player from the girls.’

The prize distribution ceremony and the closing ceremony were held after the finals and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

The President of the SL Volleyball Federation Dilan Perera, Uva Province Chief Minister, Shashendra Rajapaksa, President of DSI (Pvt.) Ltd, Nandadasa Rajapakse and Managing Director of DSI, Lal Nugaliyadde were the guests of honor.
