Gam Sabha likely to make a comeback

The All Party Representative Committee (APRC) has proposed that the Village Council (Gam Sabha) system be revived, Chairman of the APRC Science and Technology Minister Prof Tissa Vitarana told The Island yesterday.

The APRC has proposed that 100 families in a village would elect a representative and a chairman would be selected from those representatives to take care of administrative affairs of the village. The chairman would represent the village in the Local Government bodies, according to Prof Vitarana.

Local Government authorities would be empowered to take action in relation to the affairs of villages and the Provincial Councils would have powers to pass laws for the village councils.

The proposal had been submitted to the President for his approval, Prof. Vitarana said.
