President has 38 advisors - Dinesh

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had 38 advisors, many of whom were paid Rs. 40,000 to 60,000 each a month Parliament was told yesterday.

Sixteen of the advisors worked free of charge, Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena said in response to a question raised by JVP MP Ranaweera Pathirana.

The presidential advisors include former Minister Ronnie de Mel and Lakshman Jayakody, two former IGPs, Chandra Fernando and Victor Perera, film actor turned politician Ravindra Randeniya, Musician Rohana Weerasinghe and J. R. P. Sooriyapperuma.

JVP MP Pathirana said there were some advisors who did not draw salaries but used helicopters and 10-15 vehicles at State expense.

"We must have details of such expenditure as well," Pathirana said.

However, the list that had been tabled in the House did not contain the name of Senior Presidential Advisor MP Basil Rajapaksa.
