Over thousand  hospitals to get modern equipment next year
The Treasury has approved funds to refurbish over 1,000 hospitals that come under both central and local governments next year. The estimated cost for the provision of new equipment and renovation of some of the hospital buildings will be over 280 million rupees.

The spokesman for the Health Ministry said on Tuesday (08) that the main aim of next year’s (2010) hospital refurbishing project is to provide necessary medical equipment to hospitals. There are 37 hospitals which come under the Health Ministry. The total number of hospitals in the Government health sector is over thousand.

In most hospitals the medical equipment is either outdated or subject to breakdowns, he said. The Health Ministry plans to acquire state of the art high tech medical equipment for these hospitals, he said.

Some of the hospital buildings would have to be renovated as well. The Government health sector did not require more buildings, but some of the existing buildings needed renovation, the spokesman said.
