Tissa attacks JRJ Constitution
Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana charged that the 1978 Constitution drafted by late President J. R. Jayewardena was a secret document prepared without the people’s participation and not even UNP parliamentarians were consulted.

Only a few of his confidantes knew about it, he said at a meeting at Hathagoda in Yatiyantota after laying the foundation stone for a suspension bridge over the Ritigahaoya.

Professor Vitharana said the 1978 Constitution robbed the rights of the people to elect their representatives to Parliament and provincial councils paving the way for only those who had power and wealth to get elected.

Very soon this system of election would be scrapped and the freedom to elect whom the people wished would be restored, he said.

English and information technology would be extended to rural areas to enable the village youth to be educated and enlightened enabling them to secure good jobs and improve living standards.
