A case of alleged surgical misadventure resulting in the death of a woman who was admitted to the National Hospital was reported to Coroner’s Court last week.
The deceased’s son Ronage Lalith Sampath de Silva (25), an electrician, giving evidence before City Coroner Edward Ahangama, submitted that his mother Higura Gamaga Amarawathie (58), who was a diabetic, was admitted to the National Hospital on August 25 complaining of acute abdominal pain.
The patient underwent laparoscopy surgery. Thereafter her pain did not decrease. The patient developed diarrhoea, fever, puffing of the stomach and vomiting. She died on September 2nd.
Upon a Coroner’s directive, a postmortem examination was held by AJMO Dr. Dayapala. The postmortem revealed the cause of death as sepsis due to peritonitis following bowel perforation after surgery on a patient having a history of diabetes.
The Coroner issued summons on the doctor who performed surgery to appear before him on the next date of inquiry fixed for September 11.
