SC directs Ananda College to reconsider child’s application

The Supreme Court yesterday directed the Interview Panel of Ananda College, Colombo to reconsider, today September 10, 2009, both the applications submitted on behalf of M. D. Seja, for year one admission for 2010.

The father of the boy, M. D. Hemapala, of Maligakanda Lane Colombo 10, had complained to the Court that when the original interview was held last month, his son scored ninety two percent (92%) marks on proximity basis, and 70 percent marks on the category of being a child of a parent who had worked abroad, and returned to the island. The interview panel had requested the father to withdraw the application on the proximity category. But the father had refused. Consequently some members of the panel had got annoyed and returned and rejected both applications for admission.

The petition said this rejection was mala fide. The petition was yesterday supported by Faiz Mustapa PC, appearing with Ms. Faiza Markar instructed by Gaston Jayakoddy.

The Bench comprised the Chief Justice Asoka de Silva, Justice K. Sripavan and Justice Chandra Ekanayake.
