Alain Gyi (Men’s Gross), Suwen Selvaratnam (Ladies’ Gross), Manori Jayakoddy (Ladies’ Nett) and Shamal Perera (Men’s Nett) put up excellent displays to win their respective competitions at the Annual Club Golf Championship of the Victoria Golf and Country Resort, sponsored jointly by Victoria and Pericyle and worked and off at the beautiful Victoria golf course at Rajawella off Kandy over the weekend,
Alain Gyi, a previous winner of the Donald Steel Golf championship was in excellent form getting a combined score of 165 in the two rounds. He registered a score of 84 in the first round and followed up with 81 in the second. A significant feature of Alain Gyi’s play was that he never led the race in these two rounds, but performed consistently to lift the title. He was placed third in both rounds but had done well to be on top when the aggregate of the two rounds came into reckoning.
Shamal Perera finished was the runner-up with 169 on a better count back on the last nine holes after he tied with Englishman Ian Tait, who too registered a similar total. In fourth place was teenager Chamil Wickremasinghe, with 170 who after a poor display of 90 in the first round got 80 in the second with a 7 over Par. Nihal Perera was placed fifth with 174.
Ladies’ Nett Championship
A great performance by Manori Jayakoddy of Hyundai Motor Company saw her lift the Ladies’ Nett Championship with a total score of 150 playing to a handicap of 21. Manori Jayakoddy did not have such satisfaction with her first round score of 81, playing second fiddle to Usha de Silva who got 74 Nett and was expected to win this competition. But in the second round, Manori Jayakoddy fired on all cylinders to get an excellent score of 69 Nett to romp home the winner.
Usha de Silva was the runner-up with 154 Nett and Linda Harris third with 155. Nilco Jayatillake was fourth with 157. Indira Tibblin ended fifth with 158.
Regular winner Suwaneetha Selvaratnam turned in another fine performance to lift the Gross title for Ladies with a fine combined score of 174 in the two rounds. She led the first round with a gross score of 84 and did well to get 90 in the second round. Selvaratnam, who arrived from the States only a couple of days before after spending a holiday with a daughter Thuhashani, was back at business at Victoria.
Manori Jayakoddy, got 192 gross and Linda Harris 195 gross. Much was expected from Sonia Boyle who finished fifth with 197 gross.
