India to release detained UAE air force plane

NEW DELHI (AP) - India said Tuesday it would release a United Arab Emirates air force plane detained over the weekend because the crew failed to declare that it was carrying arms and ammunition to China.

The cargo was discovered during a routine check of the plane when it stopped in the eastern city of Calcutta for refueling Sunday. The plane’s customs form did not specify that it was carrying ordnance.

"The UAE authorities both here and in Abu Dhabi have since formally regretted the omission in clearly indicating items carried by the aircraft and have described it as a technical error," a statement from the External Affairs Ministry said.

The statement said a combat missile was on board.

Indian authorities questioned the 10 crew members over the past two days, but will now "facilitate the early release of the aircraft," the statement said.

The aircraft, which came from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, was headed for was flying to Xianyang in China.
