

Amritha, Godamanna - National Champions
Amritha Muttiah and Harshana Godamanna were eventual winners of the prestigious Women’s and Men’s Singles titles of the 94th Sri Lanka Tennis Nationals this year.
Muttiah, 17, who won the coveted women’s title for the first time cruised pass her former SL team-mate for Fed Cup, unseeded Nilupul Goonasekera 6-2, 6-0 while the 23-year-old Godamanna got the better of veteran Sri Lanka Davis Cup campaigner Rajeev Rajapakse 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 —for his fourth title in five years— in their respective finals held at the SL Tennis Association hard courts on Saturday (12).
Both Goonasekera and Rajapakse have never won the Nationals singles title so far in this one of the most historic annual sporting events of the island which dates back to 1884 when colonial rulers inaugurated an all-island tennis nationals, especially for the migrant British planters’ community, here.
‘Kohler,’ a world renowned plumbing products manufacturer, sponsors this year’s Nationals for the first time while Ralhum Trading Co. Pvt. Ltd., the sole agents in Sri Lanka for ‘Dunlop’ is the official ball sponsor for the third consecutive Nationals.
The Men’s and Women’s Doubles finals (this afternoon) and the Mixed Doubles final (morning) are scheduled to be held today, the final day, of the competition.
