Acting on a tip off, elite police commandos, in the early hours of yesterday, recovered a large stock of illegally imported cigarettes estimated to be valued at Rs 8 million from a distribution centre at Imbulgoda in the Gampaha police division. An STF spokesman told The Island that SP Varuna Jayasundera had conducted the operation on the instructions of DIG K. M. L. Sarathchandra. According to him, commandos moved after receiving information regarding the presence of a group of unidentified armed persons in the Imbulgoda area. Initial investigations have revealed that the cigarette distribution network is run by a Colombo-based underworld group. Sources said that the local police had not been involved in the raid.
