These crazy British guys!

Regarding the Telegraph Group news report The Island carried on 14th September under the heading "David Cameron is right: fewer ministers would be better for Britain", these British novices in democratic governance seem to be clinging on to outdated notions of what the optimum size of a cabinet should be. They seem to be unaware of the latest theories on cabinet government developed in their old colony of Sri Lanka where, following the classic model of wooden cabinets in domestic use, a cabinet should be large enough to accommodate both the wanted and unwanted objects lying around the house including antiques which have no functional value and only remind us of days gone-by!

The TG Report tells us that Gordon Brown’s cabinet of 23 full members is the largest Cabinet in history; that David Cameron, the Tory leader, plans to reduce its size to reduce the bill to the taxpayer; and that (hold your sides and laugh at these crazy British guys!) reducing the size of government is a good thing in itself. They seem to be totally out of touch with the latest research done by social scientists which show, beyond any degree of doubt, that the more taxed the taxpayers are the greater the assurance that they return those responsible for imposing those taxes to Parliament, as dutifully and happily as they forward their tax returns to the tax office! And those who pay only indirect taxes and haven’t enjoyed the privilege of filling tax returns wait eagerly for the day those responsible will recognize their existence by bringing them under the soothing comfort of the tax net!

What a shame that the Telegraph concludes that "we (the British) would be better governed by fewer people" when contemporary experience in more dynamic democracies show that we are better governed when there is a closer numerical balance between the governors and the governed!
