BOI assists In EP development

Board of Investment (BOI) assists in the development Sri Lanka’s economic condition by creating promising opportunities with the opening of it new Tris-Star Apparel Factory at Thambalagamuwa, Trincomalee. The BOI aims to attract the attention of the investor community both overseas and at home with Tri-Stars reputation as a leading manufacturer of apparel. In addition the opening of the apparel manufacturing plant will be a critical move in the advance of the eastern province as it will employ over 1,000 workers. Furthermore the factory with play a major role in implementing new skills as employees will be working in a high technology plant. Tri-Stars actions will infuse the much need development and vitality in the region.

Secure in the knowledge that the country is recovering from the damage inflicted by the three decades of war, the BOI insist that other enterprises follow Tri-Stars lead and establish more projects of a similar nature. Tri-Stars factory falls under BOI Eastern Re-awakening Programme, designed as strategic directive of the Government to form conditions for investment and employment in areas affected by the conflict. The programme intends to initiate a trend that brings jobs to the people, rather than having them forced to move and compete for employment in areas where openings already exist.

Now that the government has engaged in safeguarding the apparel sector, a strategic industry for Sri Lanka, the opening of the new factory could not have occurred at a better time. "The government and private sector need to coordinate their efforts to safeguard existing arrangements and strengthen the presence of Sri Lankan made garments in leading markets" said BOI media Director Dilip S.Samarsinghe The apparel industry accounts for half of the Country’s exports as well as employing over one million workers. Tri-Stars factory will strengthen the Sri Lankan apparel sector making it possible to meet challenges posed during the post recession period.
