Baby tuskers pay homage to Sacred Tooth Relic
KANDY – The two baby tuskers gifted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Maha Vihares of Malwatte and Asgiriya, cared for by the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, were taken into the Sri Dalada Maligawa to receive the blessings of the Sacred Tooth Relic yesterday (23).

The baby pachyderm guided by their mahouts, climbed the steps to the Hewisi Mandapa (Drumming Hall) of the shrine where they went on their knees to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Subsequently the baby tuskers Raja (Malwatte) and Sindu (Asgiriya), were treated with fruits by the Bhikkus and the Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela.

This was followed by the tying of ‘Pirith nool’ round the necks of the two baby tuskers by Ven. Tibbatuwawe Medhalankara Thero, in charge of the Thevava (service) to the Sacred Tooth Relic and Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela.

The removal of baby tuskers Raju and Sindu met with a hue and cry when some NGOs and others raised objections for separating them from the milk feeding mothers at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage about two months ago. Later the controversy subsided leaving them in the custody of the Diyawadana Nilame.

The two baby tuskers were expected to participate in the annual Esala Perahera 2010.
