WP win All Island Schools Athletic Championship

Sampath and Senanayake adjudged Best Athletes

Western Province emerged Overall champions at the 2009 All Island Schools Athletic Championships, which came to an end at the Sugathadasa Stadium, in Colombo, on Sunday. Milantha Sampath and S. R. J. P. Senanayake were adjudged Best Male and Female Athletes of the meet.

Fifteen new meet records, including one on the final day were established in the five day event.

The record on the final day was established by A. Ratnayake Madya Maha Vidyalaya, from the Central Province who won the Under-21 400x4 relay in a time of 3:18:53 seconds to improve on the previous record of 3:20:92 which was set by St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena in 2007.

Milantha Sampath of Polpithigama MMV, of Wayamba Province, who cleared a distance of 7.30 metres in the Under-19 long jump won the award for the Best Male Athlete while S. R. J. P. Senanayake of St. Joseph’s Girls’ College, of Sabaragamuwa who clocked 12:41 seconds in the Under-17 100 metres was adjudged the Best Female Athlete.

Western Province, as expected won the Overall Championship with 834 points while Central Province came in second, but were way back with just 448 points. Sabaragamuwa finished came in third with 310 points.
