

Royal College, Colombo, recorded their fifth victory in a row when they won the Dr. R.L. Hayman Trophy after beating archrivals S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavina, 15-11 in the 18th Annual Royal-Thomian water polo contest worked off at the Sugathadasa swimming pool in Colombo yesterday.
Royal got off to a flying start when they won the first leg 8-7 last Monday and continued their fine netting habit in the second leg to win 7-4 yesterday.
Yesterday, Royal started well dominating from the first quarter. They took a firm lead early scoring three goals and beating Thomians in the first half and gave no room for them to fight back during the entire game. With rain pouring down in the second half, Royal scored four goals against the Thomians’ three in that half.
For Royal, Shehan Dassanayake was outstanding as he accounted for two goals while he was amply supported by Althaf Yakoob and Musharaf Uwais who also chipped in with two goals each. Sandeep Deheragoda came up with a goal in the dying stages of the game.
For Thomians’ the skipper Darith de Silva played a lone hand netting three goals out of four which was only enough to help his team to shorten the gap between the two teams while Jaliya Goonatillake chipped in with a singal goal to be scored in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, the U-15 encounter played for Mahinda Liyanage Trophy, was won by S. Thomas’ 10-9 as they made recovery after losing the first leg by a goal last Monday.
After losing the first leg by a goal, the Thomians needed to win the second leg by two goals to win this year’s water polo encounter and they just managed do it by winning it five goals to three.
W.P.D. Peiris (3), Devshan de Mel (1) and Uvin Wijesinghe (1) shared five between them for S. Thomas’ while Akila Weerasinghe (2) and Shamika Rathnayake (1) shared three goals between them for Royal.
