The ruling SLFP-led United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) comfortably retained the Southern Provincial Council (SPC) by winning all 21 electorates in the province. The UPFA received 38 slots (including two bonus seats), the United National Party (UNP) 14 and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) three in the 55-member SPC.
The UPFA secured 804,071 votes (67.88 %), the UNP 297,180 votes (25.09%) while the JVP came a distant third with 72,379 votes (6.11 %). The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress failed to win a single seat. The SLMC contested on its own after failing to work out an electoral agreement with the UNP.
Saturday’s victory brought all Provincial Councils, including the Eastern PC, under government control.
