Nimal Siripala de Silva should resign forthwith – Renuka Herath
Country’s health service in total mess

The Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva should resign forthwith, for destroying the country’s health service, the UNP said yesterday.

Nuwara Eliya District UNP MP Renuka Herath addressing a news conference in Colombo, said that de Silva has left Sri Lanka’s health service,in a total mess and should quit immediately.

"In any other country, the Health Minister would have been forced to submit his resignation by now. But under the Mahinda Chintana such things never happen," she said. "The Rubella vaccine is manufactured by India, but even they do not use it. Only countries like Somalia, Eritriea and Sri Lanka are using Rubella."

Herath said that the shelf life of some of the Rubella Vaccines being administered in Sri Lanka may have expired and it was imperative that a thorough investigation be carried out, before human lives are put at risk.

Even in the case of the Dengue menace, all we hear are public pronouncements, but no concrete action has been taken to deal with the problem, she said.

"About six months ago there was a big song and dance, with the Health Ministry threatening legal action against those who fail to keep their gardens and surroundings clean," Herath said. "But today,if you go to Pitakotte, you would see a huge garbage dump, which is an ideal breeding ground for mosquito’s. Whom is the Minister trying to fool?"
