A young teacher of Dungkumbura in Hatharaliyadda Divisional Secretariat Division has invented a cooker that can be operated with bran giving the same effect as a gas cooker, Mr. Ravindra Jayathilaka, the English assistant of Kolonnagoda Government School in Hasalaka, the young inventor told us.

"Today ‘gas cookers’ are indispensable to most. But the frequent increase in the price of gas has become a concern for everyone. As an alternative, we can obtain the same temperature or heat as that of LP gas oven at a lower cost. Bran thrown out from rice mills is available in plenty. I thought of making use of them profitably without releasing them to the environment unused.

This cooker could be constructed with an initial expense of 3500 rupees. A cylinder 2 1/2 feet high with thick metal sheet could be used. The cylinder should be made of metal sheet that could withstand 400-500o Celcius, Jayathilaka explained how a two cell torch could be used to provide ignition.
