A Photo Exhibition completely off the Beaten track

Last weekend there opened in Colombo at the Harold Peiris Gallery an exhibition of wedding photography. The photographer was a young man hailing from Kandy - Rasanga Dissanayake a pupil of the Lal Hegoda School of Photography.

This writer expected yet another of those common place exhibitions that have made their appearance in the city from time to time, and have always been an eyesore. But this exhibition was completely different. It was truly outstanding, so much so that the show deserved a more realistic title. Perhaps "Wedding Photography as an Art Form" would have been more appropriate, as it reflected not only recording the fleeting moments at a wedding ceremony but also the artistic talents of the photographer which made the viewer feel the emotions the pictures conveyed. In other words the whole exhibition was not a picture-record only but also a drama packed with feeling and sensitivity.

There were pictures which Rasanga had taken in the open with nature as background and some even under water which needless to say would have presented technical problems in achieving the desired moment for clicking. A word about the presentation itself - it was simply excellent. The pictures were put on suitable backgrounds and grouped together intelligently. There were no titles for the pictures which made them all the more interesting for an imaginative viewer.

All together Rasanga’s exhibition was unique and should serve as an eye opener both metaphorically and physically to the new generation of young photographers showing them how Wedding Photography could produce beautiful works of art.
