Wasim Akram coming here for Confidence Walk

Wasim Akram who captained the Pakistani cricket team in 1996 will be here next month to participate in a "Confidence Walk’’ organized for November 14 to mark World Diabetes Day.

This was announced last week by Mr. Sujeewa Kuruppu, Manager, Diabetes Care of J.L. Morison Son & Jones (Ceylon) PLC who are the sold distributor here for Roche Diagnostics sponsoring the visit.

Kuruppu said that Akram, the brand ambassador for Accu-Check Active Blood Glucose Monitors, is on a regional tour promoting the concept of "Live life the way you want" to make the point that being a diabetic is not an obstacle to leading a normal life.

Akram, a diabetic from the age of 13-years, became one of the world’s top cricketers and captained Pakistan despite the disease.

A news release issued in connection with the visit said that the Confidence Walk will leave from the Sports Ministry ground to Royal College, Colombo 7, where the cricketer will address about 1,500 students playing different sports about overcoming challenges despite drawbacks.

Akram will also recognized 10 outstanding students who have excelled despite obstacles and hardship and will also hand out certificates bearing his signature to all participants at this event.

Roche Diagnostics (India) and J.L. Morisons, sole agents for Accu-Check Active Blood Glucose Monitory Systems in Sri Lanka, are sponsoring this visit.
