Ananda and Musaeus create waves at swimming nationals

The swimmers of Ananda College and Mahamaya College stole the thunder when they won the men’s and women’s overall championships at the final day of the National & Junior National Aquatic Championships, worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool yesterday.

Ananda College emerged the winner in the men’s events, accumulating 240 points, while in the women’s category Mahamaya College topped the points table with 247 points.

Sachin Kumarajeewa of St. Joseph’s College set the only record to fall yesterday when he clocked 2:12:65 minutes in the boys’ under 14, 200 LC Meter Freestyle Junior National. Kumarajeewa shattered the existing record of 2:14:72 minutes held by WKS Wickremesinghe.

Trinity’s Heshan Unamboowe enjoyed a grand championship, winning all the events he participated in. The icing on the cake came for him when he was adjudged the Best Swimmer at the championships. He swam full steam in the Men’s 100 LC Meter Backstroke Senior Nationals recording a time of 59.51 seconds. He had an exciting finish in the Men’s LC Meter Freestyle Senior Nationals when he came first with a time of 24.60, followed by KVS Priyadharshana of Sri Lanka Air Force who clocked 25.38.

Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School was adjudged the Best Swimmer in the women’s category.

Machiko Rahim and Sachin Kumarajeewa won the Best Swimmers awards in the girls and boys categories respectively.

Sri Lanka Navy and St. Bridget’s Covent were declared overall men’s and women’s winners in the diving events.

Ananda College underscored their dominance in swimming when they won the boys’ overall championships while the girls’ title went to Musaeus College.
