Sangakkara awaiting Indian challenge

There wasn’t a single international captain playing the Champions League T-20 tournament in India, but Kumar Sangakakra was present during the competition, not as a player, but as a commentator. In an interview during his short stint as a commentator, the Sri Lankan captain spoke on commentating, the upcoming Test and ODI tour to India and a host of other pertinent issues. Here are the excerpts.

Question: How was your short stint as a commentator?

Kumar Sangakkara: I have been nervous being behind the mike. But it’s been interesting, even though it’s only for two days, not something that I’m going to take very seriously. I was there to support the Wayamba team and all the other Sri Lankans in the tournament. I wanted to make sure that I said all the right things and kept myself out of trouble.

Question: You had some good moments reaching the Twenty20 World Cup final, but not so many good moments during the Champions Trophy. How would you describe your stint so far as a captain. Have you enjoyed it?

Kumar Sangakkara: I have enjoyed it. It’s a lot of responsibility, a lot of different views coming through. But we have had a great time over the last four months. Twenty20 runners-up, beat Pakistan for the first time ever at home. I’m pretty happy about the record as being captain but with only four months you can’t say much about captaincy. We have got a long way to go as a side.

Question: You have a series coming up against India.

Kumar Sangakkara: We have never won a Test match in India. So that’s a great challenge for our guys. I’m really looking forward to it. The last two-three ODI series we played in India, we have had pretty ordinary results in those matches. So it’s a lot at stake for us when we go to India.

Question: With the big Twenty20 versus ODI debate raging on, what is your stand on it?

Kumar Sangakkara: I’m not worried about one-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket. I’m very concerned about Test cricket, that’s what I really like to play. As long as Test cricket is okay, we can strike a balance between one-day cricket and T20 cricket.

We have gauged the one-day format, two innings of 20 overs shortened by 10, there are various things you can do. Full night games and things like that. But at the end of the day, I want Test cricket to remain No. 1, play a lot more Test cricket. Let one-day and T20 cricket exist in harmony.
