Ranil must be UNP’s presidential candidate because of his courage  — Keheliya

KANDY – The most suitable presidential candidate of the UNP-led alliance would be UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, who had the courage to brave defeat at 20 elections, Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minster Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday addressing a meeting at Galaha, where 500 persons who had crossed over from the UNP were given SLFP membership.

The mass defection had been organised by the SLFP Organiser for Patahewaheta Central Provincial Council Member Mahinda Abeykoon.

Minister Rambukwella said there was no future for the United National Party. The UNP would continue to face many more defeats at elections including the parliamentary and presidential polls to be held in a few months time, Minister Rambukwella said.

Ministers Rambukwella said though the UNP had earlier boasted of having 35 per cent of the country’s vote bank, its share had dwindled to a mere 25 per cent. "How can the UNP ever dream of winning an election," he asked.

The people had accepted President Mahinda Rajapaksa as their leader and the UNP was only wasting its time and energy by contesting elections that it could not win, the minister said.

Central Provincial Councillor Mahinda Abeykoon, Yamuna Kusum Liyanage and several others spoke.
