Pieces of glass inside phials of drugs
Health Minister  promises legal action against drug companies
… also suspects sabotage by anti-government  elements

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that he would take action to prosecute drug companies or cancel drug purchasing orders placed by the Ministry if they were found guilty of supplying low quality drugs.

The discovery of pieces of glass inside a phial of antibiotics at the Ratnapura Teaching hospital and inside a phial of a painkiller at the Elpitiya Hospital was being investigated, the Minister said.

Minister Silva said that he had appointed an independent committee to investigate the complaints. The CID had been called in to handle the probes, he said.

"There seems to be some sort of sabotage by anti-government elements," the Minister said, "the investigations are being conducted and the culprits will have to face grave consequences.

Minister de Silva added that the State Pharmaceutical Corporation imported medicine from the best multinational drug companies known for maintaining globally accepted standards of producing drugs. The presence of pieces of glass inside phials of drugs was a matter for serious concern as the health ministry was entirely responsible for drug distribution, storage and ensuring quality.

He said that the health ministry would not hesitate to institute legal proceedings against drug companies in case the current investigations revealed that the companies were at fault.
