Sri Lankan shuttlers shine at World Championships

Sri Lanka’s shuttlers competing in the Under-19 World Championships in Malaysia got off to a cracking start by winning their initial matches.

According to Sri Lanka Badminton Federation sources, the first two victories by the Sri Lankans were recorded by the country’s Asian doubles gold medal winning pair of Achini Ratnasiri and Upuli Samanthika, who won the ladies’ singles and doubles events against Germany. Sri Lanka also beat Australia.

In the men’s category matches worked off on Wednesday, Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Hettiarachchi and Dilshan Kariyawasam recorded wins in the singles events against Singapore.

The Sri Lanka men’s team comprises Nuwan Hettiarachchi, Dishan Kariyawasam, Omesh Fernando and Harsha Perera while the women’s team comprises Achini Ratnasiri, Upuli Samanthika, Susmita Illangakoon and Oshadee Kuruppu.

The team is accompanied by coach Chintaka Fernando and Anil de Silva (manager).

Most of the Sri Lankan players received special training in Malaysia prior to the commencement of the World Championships. Women’s players Ratnasiri and Samanthika had the opportunity of playing in a club tournament in Indonesia before the World Championships.
