TEM Surgery now in Sri Lanka

TEM Surgery is an alternative to more radical abdominal surgery. It is performed transanally and is a minimal invasive solution for the excision of certain rectal polyps and early stage rectal tumors and large rectal polyps that cannot be removed by Colonscopy. Furthermore, recurrent rectal polyps which need full thickness excision using advanced equipment can now be easily removed by this simple procedure, which is performed with specially designed microsurgical instrumentation, is much less painful and has a faster recovery period rather than radical abdominal surgery.

Director Medical Services Hemas Hospital, Dr. Aruna Rabel said ‘The principal goal in the management of any patient with rectal cancer is to provide an optimal chance for cure while maintaining their quality of life; TEM Surgery makes this possible, for very early rectal cancers and it has revolutionized the resection of rectal lesions and it also avoids Laparotomy’ (Opening of the abdomen).

He further stated ‘compared to radical abdominal surgery TEM surgery has no colostomy or large incision and is a less painful simple operation with early recovery and discharge from the hospital, henceforth it has much more beneficiary value to the patient’.
