International construction market opens via Malaysia

The State Engineering Corporation (SEC) has signed an Agreement with an International Construction Company in Malaysia in order to enter the international construction market to undertake massive construction work.

The Majulia YWC Builders International Construction Company in Malaysia is of the view that the State Engineering Company will enter the international construction industry through Majulia YWC Builders company and undertake large-scale construction activities. The Majulia YWC Builders company will provide the required infrastructure facilities to State Engineering Corporation for construction work, the Construction and Engineering Services Ministry said.

Construction and Engineering Services Minister Rajitha Senaratne told The Island Financial Review that the State Engineering Corporation was running at a loss when he assumed duties as Minister, but he made every effort to energize the corporation to being a profitable state organization in a matter of few years.

He pointed out that the principal aim of the agreement would be to enter the international construction market through a world reputed construction company. The Sri Lankan Government was positive that the State Engineering Corporation would be able to popularize Sri Lanka and undertake massive construction work in different countries.

Minister Senaratne added that it was the first time a Sri Lankan corporation signed an historical construction agreement with an international company and the corporation would undertake any kind of construction work in any country without hesitation.

The Government was certain that the Malaysian company would also provide specialized training to Sri Lankan construction personnel on modern construction technology.

Minister Senaratne emphasized that although the Government had decided to dispose of the corporation a few years ago, the corporation had made steady progress during the past few years. At the beginning of 2009 the State Engineering Corporation earned a substantial amount of profit and 553 employees who had been serving the corporation for 10 to 15 years on contract basis had been made permanent.
