The All Ceylon Government Medical Officers’ Association says that the government plans to cease sterilization of stray dogs citing lack of funds.
Dr. Dhammika Pathirana, General Secretary of the Association told The Island that already a part of the project had been suspended.
The Association recently raised this issue with Health Secretary Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage. Pathirana said that the move to suspend the project was announced at a meeting held on October 22 chaired by an Additional Secretary to the Health Ministry at the rabies control unit.
Pathirana said that the project launched on the recommendation of the World Health Organisation had been an important segment in the country’s rabies control programme. He warned that rabies would again raise its ugly head unless the ministry fully implemented the project. He alleged that pharmaceutical companies could be behind the Health Ministry move. (SF)
