Land grabbing in East fact or fiction?

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought a detailed report from the Government Agents of Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee on the allegations made by the TNA MP P. Ariyanainthiran that the Sinhalese were being settled on lands belonging to Tamils and Muslims.

Ariyanainthiran had complained to the President through a petition that Sinhalese were grabbing the lands belonging to Tamils and Muslims in areas like Vakarai, Kiran, Samanthurai and Kuchaveli in the East.

SLMC MP and Secretary General of the party M. T. Hasan Ali too made a similar serious allegation in parliament recently.

He charged that Muslim community of the East had lost 62,670 acres of paddy land due to encroachment and said in the Ampara District 36 per cent of Sinhalese owned 66 per cent of the land and in Trincomalee district 34 per cent Sinhalese owned 70 per cent of land.
