

Four schools have already qualified for the upcoming school segment of the Carlton Sevens rugby tournament, scheduled to take place on November 28 and 29, in Colombo.
St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota, Maliyadeva Kurunegala, St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala and Vidyartha College, Kandy have booked their berths in the tournament for schools which will be held concurrently with the international tournament.
A source from the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) told The Island that the four schools qualified through a tournament held for schools in the Central, Uva, Sabragamuwa, Ruhunu, North Central and Wayamba Provinces.
The source added that an idea has been mooted to have two school teams and a combined development team from these provinces instead of the original plan to have four teams.
Another tournament will be held, soon, for schools in the Western Province which will be held on November 7 and 8 at the Royal College Sports Complex stadium, in Reid Avenue.
A total of 25 teams have send in their entries for this tournament. Only eight teams will be selected for the main tournament from Western Province, making the total number of teams for the schools segment of the Carlton Sevens Tournament, 12.
A well placed source said that leading rugby playing schools like S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia, St. Joseph’s College Maradana, Thurstan College Colombo, Kingswood College Kandy, Dharmaraja College Kandy and Trinity College Kandy have refrained from contesting the qualifying tournament for the Carlton Sevens.
The focus on the Carlton Sevens Tournament will be the international tournament which feature the national teams of Japan, Korea, China, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan and host nation Sri Lanka.
