Royal beat S. Thomas’ in final
Royal College, Colombo dominated proceedings from the word go and defeated arch-rivals S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia seven goals to two in the final water polo encounter at the Junior National and National Aquatic Championship ended at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool in Colombo on Monday.
Royal started well and got a firm lead as they scored three goals for nil at the half way mark and gave no room for their opposition to counter attack at any point.
Royalist Purna Kankanige was outstanding as he accounted for four goals while A. Yahoob, W. Mariharbawa and S. Dasanayake chipped in with a goal each to record their ultimate points tally.
D. C. de Silva’s two goals for S. Thomas’ was in vain as his efforts were only good enough to shorten the gap between the teams.
Meanwhile in the Women’s category, Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo defeated Ladies’ College, Colombo three goals to two in a close encounter. Both teams scored a goal each in the first half but Visakha scored two more goals in the second half against Ladies’ single goal.
L. Kosgodage (2) and S. Gunawaroama (1) shared three goals for the winners while S. Lahie and D. Amarasekara scored a goal each for the losers.
Sri Lanka Navy meanwhile won the third place both in the Men’s and the Women’s category. SL Navy defeated Royal College ‘B’ four goals to nil in the men’s consolation final while they got a walkover by Sri Lanka Air Force in the Women’s consolation final.
The Junior water polo final for Under-15 players also was worked off between Royal College and S. Thomas’ College and Royal emerged the champions in the boy’s category while Bishop’s College, Colombo beat Visakha College to win the girl’s title.
