Dengue reaches 28,623, death toll from Jan. to Oct. 269

The total number of dengue patients at the end of last month reached 28,623 while the number of deaths for the same period was 269, the Epidemiology Unit said.

A spokesman said yesterday that the highest number of cases, 3,845, from the beginning of January till October 30, had been reported from the Kandy District. The number of deaths in the district had been 40. The second largest number of dengue cases 3,764 during the ten-month period was reported from the Colombo District, while the number of deaths was 32.

The Gampaha District has reported, 3,702 cases while the death toll in the District was 52, the highest so far.

The spokesman for the Unit giving a breakdown in some of the other areas affected by dengue, said that Kegalle had come third with 3,614 cases and 23 deaths. Statistics of dengue cases and deaths in other areas have been as follows: Kurunegala, 2,657 with 17 deaths, Matale, 1,696 and 13 deaths, Kalutara, 1,398 and 12 deaths. Batticaloa has reported only 551 cases with 17 deaths.

The Epidemiological Unit warned the onset of the rains could lead to a second phase of the epidemic if the public failed to continue with the weekly cleaning programmes to rid their environs of possible mosquito breeding places. Solid waste should be disposed of methodically, while containers strewn about carelessly in gardens should be discarded.
