Education Minister Susil Premajayanth yesterday said that of 1,011 schools in the Northern Province, only 614 had been so far opened for academic activities.
Responding to a query raised by JVP MP R. P. A. Pathirana, he said that 397 schools which had been closed due to the war, would be reopened once the government completes the ongoing resettlement process.
He estimated the northern student population at 80,585. He said that Rs. 200 million has been allocated to reconstruct schools destroyed in war and also to repair damaged buildings.
The Minister said that basic facilities had been provided to students, now accommodated at welfare camps, to continue with their studies. He assured that everything possible would be done to restore normalcy in the entire Northern Province. This would be one of the top most priorities of the government, he said, adding that students now being accommodated at facilities both in the North as well as East, would receive their attention.
