Over 50 houses destroyed by strong gales

The District Secretary of Kalutara, S. Happuarachchi, said that immediate steps had been taken to provide essential food-items to victims of the gale in the villages of Ihala Welgama, Bulathsinghala and surrounding villages. It was reported that nearly fifty two houses were damaged due to the strong winds.

The Principal of Ihala Welgama Junior School, R. M. S. R. Ratnayake said a school had been damaged by a falling tree destroying school equipment.

The Minister of Education Services Nirmala Kotelawala was the chief organiser of SLFP, Bulathsinhala. The UNP organiser Kithsiri Kahatapitiya and several officers visited the scene to oversee to the distribution of relief

Another report said an earth-slip had occurred at Kasgalana in Palandanuwara DS area, causing temporary closure of the road to Makdiella hydro-power station and the army training centre.

Immediate steps have been taken to clear the road.
