‘Comprehensive response’ ready for EC - GL

The Government has prepared a "comprehensive response" to be delivered to the European Commission (EC) via Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Brussels, in a bid to retain the GSP plus facility for the country, Minister of International Trade Prof. G. L. Peiris told parliament yesterday.

The EC had given time till November 6th for the government to send its observations to the Commission before it makes a final decision on whether to continue to give Sri Lanka the preferential trade facility after it ends in June next year.

The Minister said that the report has been compiled after gathering details from relevant ministries.

Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera asked that the report be tabled in Parliament.

Prof. Peiris said that he would do so after the report is given to the European Commission.
