Sentenced for assault on schoolboy
Reconstituted Bench to hear teachers’ appeal
The appeal filed by three teachers of a well-known Colombo boys’ school, in the Court of Appeal, is to be argued before a freshly constituted Bench.
Yesterday, the appeal was called before Justice Upali Abeyratne and Justice Sisila de Abrew. Justice Abeyratne declined to hear the appeal for personal reasons. The issue has been referred to the President of the Court of Appeal to reconstitute the Bench.
In this case, a 17-year-old boy was assaulted on January 16, 2004, in the school premises, in the presence of his mother. Subsequently, the teachers were convicted, on September 13, 2005, by the Colombo High Court for assault. A sentence of two years simple imprisonment was imposed on them.
The teachers subsequently appealed against the conviction and the sentence. Shanaka Ranasinghe and Prasanthalal De Alwis appeared for the accused appellant teachers. Senior State Counsel Rohantha Abeysuriya appeared for the State.
