KANDY - Plantation Industries Minister D. M. Jayaratne said that the recently formed UNP-led United National Alliance was only a ‘Meti Pambaya’ (clay scarecrow).
The UNP was the only party except the SLMC with a vote base, while the so-called partners had no base at all, said the Minister. They would perish very soon leaving the UNP all alone once again, he said.
He made these observations at a media conference at the Ambuluwewa Bio-Diversity Complex, early this week.
The UNP, an old established political party with a strong foundation and reputation would face a serious setback, he said.
At the Provincial Council elections held in the recent past, the UPFA had polled 5.1 million votes. The UNP could secure about 3 million votes.
Minister Jayaratna said that he had remained loyal and faithful to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) right through his life. He became the 13th member of the SLFP after the party was founded by eminent politicians of the calibre of S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, H. Sri Nissanka, Badi-Ud-Din Mahamud, A. P. Jayasuriya D. M. & D. A. Rajapakse etc.
