I think we had a clear example from the Bambalapitiya Police as to how we should handle our disputes. The cold blooded, brutal murder that was recorded on video for posterity, demonstrates two things. The solution to your disputes lies in you doing something about it and the Police are above the law and can do ANYTHING they want even with any number of witnesses.
This, contrary to popular belief is not entirely the fault of the Police force. This is something that has been nurtured and condoned by all those with power, over a number of decades the fruition of which we are seeing now.
Some years ago I wrote an article calling for the disbanding of the Police and this newspaper was kind enough to publish. I have unfortunately lost the copy I had and suggest that the Editor considers publishing that piece together with this should he choose to publish this.
Another example seems to be coming from Palitha Range Bandara himself who is currently engaged in a demonstration near the Parliament, together with his family. I also have two further first hand examples where the culprit in two assault cases both pertaining to the Kandy area have resulted in no action from the Police. One case concerns the Katugastota Police and the other the Kandy Police in these cases the assailant has been clearly identified with his name address etc handed over to the Police but the Police is unable to get these culprits to even come to the Police Stations! In the case of the Kandy Police all high ups excluding the DIG have been spoken to all to no avail.
I don’t wish to have calls from the Police in the mistaken belief that this epitomizes efficiency asking for details on the cases concerning the Kandy Police. I will follow them up when I have the time although I have very little belief.
What is clear is that the culprits are more powerful that the custodians of the law and dealing with them using whatever means are available to us, the general public seems to be what we are being told to do by the Police force itself.
