Thousands of soccer crazy fans from Kalutara are expected to throng the City Football Complex, at Slave Island to support their home team, Kalutara Park Sports Club, who will be aiming to win their first All Island Premier Championship, when they meet Java Lane SC in the final of the CEAT Premier League Soccer Championship on Saturday. Kick off is set for 3.30 pm.
Kalutara Park SC beat fancied Kandy York SC in a close encounter by 1 goal to 0 last week, to qualify for the final.
Punsara Senanayaka, the main striker for Kalutara Park SC is in tremendous form with seven goals in the tournament. He could prove very dangerous if allowed to make it into the penalty area.
Attacking midfielders Roshan Malinga and Chandu Sampath have been the feeders and play makers for the Kalutara team. Java Lane’s defenders will need to keep a sharp eye on the duo.
Kalutara Park SC will miss their regular keeper Sujan Perera who is on tour with the Sri Lanka Under-19 team in Dubai for an international tournament. In the semi final, Sujan was simply brilliant, keeping the opponents at bay with an outstanding performance. In his absence, Chandima Sampath will keep goal.
Java Lane SC, who travelled to Kurunegala last Sunday beat Pelicans SC in a hard fought match 1-0, thanks to their captain Maxie Leighton whose header found the net. The man who set up the goal was mid fielder Madawa.
Asiri Lamahewa, who missed the semi final has loads of experience and is a reliable shooter. He has seven goals to his credit. The Asiri-Maxi combination is bound to cause problems for any defense line-up if they are well fed by the mid fielders, but unfortunately, play maker Madawa will have to sit out the final due to the two yellow cards he was hit with for rough play.
Former National player Rumy Packeerally has moulded this young and spirited outfit from Slave Island into a match winning combination and there is no doubt that the final will be a hard fought, exciting affair.
The winners will carry away the prestigious CEAT Trophy plus Rs. 300,000, while the runner-up will walk away with the CEAT runner-up trophy and Rs. 200,000.
The chief guest at the final will be Randeep Narang, Managing Director/CEO, of CEAT Kelani Associated Holdings (Pvt) Limited.
