HYDERABAD, India (AP) - Shaun Marsh’s maiden century led Australia to an imposing 350-4 against India in the fifth limited-overs international Thursday.
The left-hander scored 112 and featured in a dominant opening stand of 145 with Shane Watson, who hit a brisk 93 off 89 deliveries, to give the injury-hit tourists a chance of surging ahead in the seven-match series.
After four games, the teams are tied 2-2.
Batting first after skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss, Australia got off to a flying start with Watson dominating the opening stand. The opener struck three sixes and nine boundaries on a pitch that offered no assistance to the bowlers.
Watson appeared set for his fifth century in one-day internationals when he miscued a delivery from offspinner Harbhajan Singh (1-44) which was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at deep-midwicket.
Marsh then added 91 runs for the second wicket with captain Ponting, who contributed 45 before seam bowler Praveen Kumar beat him with a slower delivery to dislodge the stumps.
Marsh hit two sixes and eight boundaries as he surpassed his previous best of 81. He fell to a fine catch by Gautam Gambhir off pace bowler Ashish Nehra (1-79).
Cameron White continued to punish the Indian attack, smashing five sixes and two fours in his 33-ball 57. He was out on the final delivery of the innings, snapped by Sachin Tendulkar off Kumar whose 2-68 were the best figures among Indian bowlers.
Michael Hussey remained unbeaten on a 22-ball 31 to continue his outstanding form on this tour.
Hit hard by injuries, Australia made three changes to the team that won the fourth one-dayer Monday.
Pace bowler Clint McKay replaced Mitchell Johnson to make his debut in one-day internationals, while all-rounder Adam Voges and quick Ben Hilfenhaus came in for the injured Moises Henriques and Peter Siddle.
Injuries suffered by Siddle and Henriques this week has further depleted the Australian touring team, which has now seen five players return home for recuperation.
Veteran pace bowler Brett Lee, wicketkeeper Tim Paine and all-rounder James Hopes were earlier sidelined for the rest of the series.
