Agricultural development to be achieved through technology

Agribusiness in Sri Lanka has much potential for growth which is not being exploited and the private sector does not want to develop.

The country which has the necessary climate and which was prospering through agriculture now has declined says the Department of Agriculture.

According to Dr. Kamal Karunagoda of the Department of agriculture there should be a new policy for agriculture, which will help the sector further grow.

Sri Lanka already has 1.7 million hectares of land which is cultivated, and the potential land which is available for further development is calculated at 1.3 million hectares.

According to Ms. Chiranganie Mubarak of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka, there is a need for new methods for farmers, mostly needed in the rural areas where agriculture is the source of income of many families.

The farmers should be enabled to get information to sell their crops at a suitable price. Farmers are having difficulties to get the right price and so the agriculture sector is not very popular.

Even after government assistance for the agri sector with equipment and the necessary fertilisation at low prices, farmers are facing difficulties to even pay off some of the charges with the low price they receive out of the crops.

The need of a new policy as well as a new communication system is necessary to profit the sector so that the relevant parties can get the maximum benefit out of the business.

According to CIC Agribusiness, there should be more benefits for the sector to continue and further grow.

The sector should be educated on sustainability and should have the essentials at a lower price as well as receiving the maximum benefit out of cultivation.

Farmers are getting lower prices for their crops due to middlemen.

The ICTA has implemented a website and a SMS alert system so the farmers can know the prices of the Dambulla market instead of relying on information through middlemen.

The private sector should get involved with agribusiness, and develop this sector.
