Clinical Immunology Update – 2009

Two, one day workshops titled "Clinical Immunology Update – 2009" were recently held in Colombo and Kandy by the UK-Sri Lanka Immunology Foundation (UK-SLIF) in association with the Ceylon College of Physicians (CCP) and the Kandy Society of Medicine (KSM). Over 350 doctors from different parts of the country attended these two meetings. The speakers at these meetings were: Dr. Lalith Wijeyaratne, Prof Upali Ilangasekera, Prof Anura Weerasinghe, Prof SAM Kularatne, Dr. Rajiva de Silva, Dr. AWM Wazil, Dr. Chula Herath, Dr. Chandrika Jayasinghe, Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, Dr. Harith Wimalaratne, Dr. Udaya Ranawaka, Dr. Indika Bandara Gawarammana, Dr. Senaka Rajapakse, Dr. Arjuna de Silva, Dr. Anoma Siribaddana, Dr. Priyadharshini Galappatthi, Dr. Padmalal Gurugama and Dr. Suranjith Seneviratne.

Immunology, genetics and molecular medicine are newer areas of medicine. The fields of Clinical Immunology and Molecular Medicine have developed rapidly in recent years, and important advances have been made in the identification of the immune and genetic basis of many common diseases. Advances in Clinical Immunology have translated into direct patient care in the form of novel diagnostic tests and targeted treatment options.

Knowledge and interest in Clinical Immunology and Clinical Allergy have been expanding in recent years in Sri Lanka. The UK-Sri Lanka Immunology Foundation hopes to provide some educational activities within these fields in Sri Lanka and plan to conduct annual Clinical Immunology updates. The president of the UK-SLIF is Dr. Suranjith L Seneviratne, Consultant in Clinical Immunology and Allergy at St. Mary’s Hospital, London. Its secretary is Dr. N. P. Gurugama, Senior Registrar in Medicine, Colombo South Teaching Hospital and its patron is Dr. Lalith Wijeyaratne, Consultant Rheumatologist, National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
