Moratuwa wins 26th Inter-University Regatta

The oarsmen of University of Moratuwa made a late comeback to win the 26th edition of the Inter-University Regatta beating University of Colombo by 26 points to 16 on the Beira Lake Waters at the Colombo Rowing Club last Saturday.

The University of Moratuwa organised this year’s regatta in collaboration with the physical education department of University of Moratuwa and the Old Mora Rowing- the alumni network of university of Moratuwa of past oarsmen and women.

The Inter University Regatta which was held for the Professor Stanley Wijesundera Challenge trophy is the bench mark event of university rowing in Sri Lanka.

It is considered to be the most coveted championship among university oarsmen and oarswomen. The regatta, dubbed as the local version of Oxford-Cambridge boat race was first held in the year of 1980.

This year Moratuwa University team was captained by Lakmal Arandara while Maheel Gamage coached the team.The university of Colombo was captained by Janith Akmeemana with Lloyd Sirimanna as the coach.

The Colombo rowers started well and were leading 16-14 just before the boat race, the last race of the day and the one that offered most number of points. With the event offering 12 points, it turned out to be the most crucial event as the winners of this event would walk away with a win. Moratuwa University lads clocked 3 minutes and 34 seconds to collected the 12 points and with that this year’s annual Regatta.
