Raza back in action after terror attack on cricket team

Pakistani cricket umpire Ahsan Raza, who was shot during a terrorist attack on a convoy taking the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 3rd has made a brave recovery and was in action during yesterday’s One-Day International between New Zealand and Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking ahead of the game, umpire Raza recounted his close shave with death when he took two bullets during the ambush which killed the driver of the van that he was travelling together with other match officials.

More than a dozen gunmen used rifles, grenades and rocket launchers to attack the convoy as it approached the venue for the third day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, also injuring players and killing six police officers.

"I have to thank God for this speedy recovery," said Raza, who had one bullet in his abdomen while another pierced his lungs. "I was in intensive care for 26 days and after another four days in the regular ward, discharged," said the former first class wicket-keeper, who functioned as the reserve umpire in yesterday’s game.
